Kim shares her post-BBC experience to date

Beauty Boot Camp Works!

Since the reveal on May 13, 2008, I have lost a total of 30 lbs and close to 30 inches from my entire body, which moved my weight from 180lbs to 150lbs.   After the BBC contest  I was really scared that I would fail with keeping up the continued weight loss and living healthier as I had followed the eating plan and exercise to the letter during the challenge and did not ever cheat.  So now, here I am facing the world without the BBC and the accountability to the team and contest and I felt afraid, so in a effort to create an immediate safety net for myself I started working out with another great training on the GOB Staff, FitzRoy Smith, who leveraged the summer months to add outdoor cardio to my gym weight training, which really trimmed my body down.  Additionally we made a few food changes which also continued to help with the leaning process as we found it hard to make this short, stocky, muscular frame, with a large fat overlay, leaner.  The increased cardio, and the increase of veggies deemed to be a good combination for my body type.

As I become more confident with my own ability to use all the techniques I have learned to work out alone, I still felt the need to work out with someone else at least 2 days a week.  (Not sure of myself) So for the month of September I introduced another form of exercise and leveraged the knowledge from another GOB resource Paul Delgado-Professional Boxer.  I really enjoyed combining the Cardio and Boxing techniques with the strength training to create an all in one experience.  I worked out with Paul for the month of Sept, and plan to continue working out with him and using the skills learned through boxing to reach my weight loss goal of 135lbs.  The last 15 lbs seem to be the hardest to release.
Additionally, I am continuing to have excellent skin care success with the products from Institute Dermed and the team of Outstanding Professionals within their organization. I really enjoy my skincare treatments with Kristin and Kim and the Endermology appointments with Jenny.  I love the team and the products prescribed for me to use.

Lastly, I am keeping my hair together through the services offered by Noland Suttle Hair Salon, directly provided by Todd Noland and LiNoka.  Since the reveal they are keeping my hair styles fresh and new and we are looking forward to going shorter and adding color.  I have really enjoyed getting to know Todd and Linaka.

In closing, I really miss the BBC experience (with the ladies from the Boot Camp) and all the wonderful exercise and nutritional experiences with AMY!!!

Photo Editorial in JEZEBEL July 2008

Jezcovericon

This month's issue of JEZEBEL has the photos we shot with Lisa Sciascia that I mentioned in the May 5 Blog Post.

Of all the editorials I have done, I have to say the credit mention JEZEBEL gave me is the largest, most prominant credit I have ever gotten from magazine work! Usually you would never see it unless you searched for it. And of course, of all the shoots I've done, this hair was the most "undone, natural, un-styled looking" I have ever been tasked with.

AWESOME is the word for this

GigaPan is the name of the way cool new camera technology. One of my clients, Jason Bernstein, sent me this link to the story in New York Times GigaPan Technology. Click on the link; it will take you to the story with an example of a GigaPan photograph. Once there, you can zoom in and out on the photo and move it with your cursor. This is the closest you can get to seeing a panorama perspective. It is amazing. You can even zoom in to the point of recognizing faces on the patio.

What does this have to do with hair? Nothing. Just thought it was cool.

Locks of Love; Cindy and Alberto

Alberto1b   Locks of Love is a public non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children under age 18 suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis. We meet a unique need for children by using donated hair to create the highest quality hair prosthetics.
Most of the children helped by Locks of Love have lost their hair due to a medical condition called alopecia areata, which has no known cause or cure. The prostheses we provide help to restore their self-esteem and their confidence, enabling them to face the world and their peers.

Alberto consults with Cindy before her cut to make sure she truly understands where her final length will be and also suggests several new styles for her once the hair is shorter. Cindy has spent over a year waiting for this today. I am reminded of the short story The Gift of the Maji by O. Henry as we cut her hair to be sent to Locks of Love. Who can tell how much love was given this day and to how many it may spread. Cindy gave of herself literally today.Alberto2b

The requirements for donating hair to locks of love are:
-10 inches measured tip to tip is the minimum length needed for a hairpiece.
-Hair must be in a ponytail or braid before it is cut.
-Hair must be clean and completely dry before it is mailed in.
-Place the ponytail or braid inside of a plastic bag, and then inside of a padded envelope.
-Fill out the hair donation form, or write your name and address on a separate sheet of paper and include inside the envelope.
-All hair donations must be mailed to Locks of Love at:
          2925 10th Avenue N
          Suite 102
          Lake Worth, FL 33461
-Noland Suttles Salon is happy to donate a haircut and style to anyone who donates their hair to Locks of Love to anyone

Parish Restaurant New Orleans Cuisine in Inman Park

Parish  Hailed as "Best New Restaurant -The Sunday Paper, May 2008" I had to go see for myself. So, last Sunday I checked it out. First of all, let me say I didn't recognize that part of North Highland. Wow! lots of money has been spent.

Parish claims "unique people, delicious food, good-for-the-earth goods and lively music now all come together in this melting pot of New Orleans’ vibrant culture within Inman Park".

I had The Sunflower Seed Salad and The Georgia Vegetable Plate. I have to say they were both brilliant. Especially the vegetables. The food was most definitely worth the trip. One of the misfortunes of being IN a service business is the curse of high expectations when BEING served. I always watch and try to learn; I hope someone from Parish takes the time to do the same soon. Except for a few, the majority of the floor staff were not into it all; ours especially. They seemed very engaged in something, it just wasn't the customers. So... go for the food, expecting it to be distinctive and creative. Just plan on asking for everything 2-3 times and not getting at least one of something at all, twice.

The Origins of Father's Day

Dear Fashion Divas: The idea of Father’s Day was conceived by Sonora Dodd of Spokane, Wash., while she listened to a Mother’s Day sermon in 1909. Dodd wanted a special day to honor her father, William Smart, a widowed Civil War veteran who was left to raise his six children by himself on a rural farm. June was chosen for the first Father’s Day celebration — proclaimed for June 19, 1910, by Spokane’s mayor — because it was the month of William Smart’s birth. The first presidential proclamation honoring fathers was issued in 1966 when President Lyndon Johnson designated the third Sunday in June as Father’s Day. Father’s Day has been celebrated annually since 1972 when President Richard Nixon signed the public law that made it permanent.

Cheryl's Makeover - Theory and Planning

Cherylb4afterasone_2 I knew the instant I started talking to Cheryl what I wanted to do with her hair- at least in a general way. Cheryl is the Mom of 3 young boys. One of the first things out of her mouth was that fact. She is busy; all day, every day. As you can see in the before picture, she has lots of hair. That was problem one. You can also see that she does not have much time to spend on herself, thus long hair, easily grabbed and pulled back. Cheryl's hair style had evolved as a response to her lifestyle. It was not an expression of who she is but more a default result from what she does.

The very first thing I had to deliver was a style that would be as easy to manage as her default "leave long and pull back" style. Cheryl's hair texture when left to dry on its own was frizzy, fuzzy with uneven curl and wave. Left long, she was able to style it quickly by pulling as she dried with a flat brush; but it never really looked styled, just smaller and less fuzzy. One of our stylists, Julie Moore, performed our Keratin Smoothing Process on Cheryl's hair. We jokingly call this service the anti-perm amongst ourselves at Noland Suttles. This was just what Cheryl needed to give HER control of her hair. We had to make styling her hair easier, not harder because this was the critical criteria given the demands her life currently makes on her time.

READ CHERYL'S OWN THOUGHTS

Once Cheryl's primary obstacle had been overcome, the door to a larger selection of cut and color options was opened much wider. More about those choices in future posts...

Beauty Boot Camp

Blogbanner2600px_3

Starting today, I will be adding some of my work on the Beauty Boot Camp Blog here into my own personal blog.

In case you don't know, in January I partnered with Institut' DERMed and Gym of Buckhead. Together we launched the first ever (as far as we know) joint collaboration between a hair salon, medispa and gym. Our mission was to see if we could help regular people to acheive extraordinary results in all three arenas of their personal life: hair, skin and health/fitness. We advertised our concept locally and had over 300 registrations. On February 14, we hosted a launch kickoff party. We had over 150, almost 200, people arrive to be interviewed as candidates to be selected. We only slected five! It was very difficult.

We then proceeded to put our five candidates through our 8 week course named My Beauty Boot Camp. In case you have been wondering where I have been these last 10-12 weeks... that is where. If you want to learn more about Beauty Boot Camp, click here to visit the Beauty Boot Camp Blog. Or just visit MyBeautyBootCamp.Com

I want to keep the two blogs somewhat seperated. Here in the Noland Suttles Blog you will read only about hair and salon stories with an occasional mention of Beauty Boot Camp.

Thanks for reading....    -t

Jezzebel Photo Shoot with Sciascia

I can't show you any of the photo shoot yet because it hasn't gone to print, but last week Lisa Sciascia was in from New York to do the next fashion editorial for Jezebel Magazine. Claire Fricke with Click-New York Pro was the model and she was just fantastic. The entire shoot was just tremendous. I can't wait to see it in print.

We shot on location way out in Crabapple, we started at 7:00 AM which meant we left Atlanta at 6! The drive was worth every minute though. Victoria really had some great locations scouted out and the clothes were perfect. I wish I could put some of the images up today. Keep an eye peeled for the next issue of Jezebel; I believe it will be in that issue.May08atlantanweb_3

And, FYI.... the latest Atlantan Magazine came out today and I used an image from a shoot a while back. It always amazes me how perception changes. When I am shooting photography for photography's sake (not just hair and fashion) I am almost always disappointed with the majority of the images, mainly because my mental perceptions and expectations of each image always seems to be better than the actual image. I generally won't even look at them until 6 months have passed so I can see them in an objective way.

The image I used in the Atlantan this month is a perfect example of this phenomenon. Both Lisa and I went through the images right after shooting, and BOTH of us overlooked it. Looking at it later with fresh eyes, I now think it is my favorite of the entire shoot. Go figure..

P.S. Sometime in the next week or so I will post a photo story about how I got the soft curl into Jessica's hair. She has natural, fine, stick straight hair and using this technique will give you NATURAL looking curl, all day.
